It happened in the empty grounds of an abandoned circus where, if you listen close enough, you could still hear the children’s laughter as the clown does his stunt and the old fiddler’s lively music which he played all day long. From these remnants of the joy and happiness that once was sprang forth magic.
It wasn’t the spectacular kind of magic, with bright lights and shooting stars. It was magic quiet as the wind, and just as mysterious. It blew through the loneliness in search of someone to please. Finally, the magic crept inside a barred-up stall inhabited by two little dolls.
And the magic, in its momentary burst of life, bestowed itself upon the two mannequins.
One of the dolls, the sailor, sat straight, blinked twice, and spoke.
“Where am I? Who am I?”
His companion, the sheep girl, stared blankly at him and shrugged.
They sat there in the darkness, without an inkling who they were or where they were, but a part of them, strangely enough, was looking for something.
“Why are we here?” asked the sheep girl, shaking off the dust that has gathered on her arms.
“I have no idea.” Said the sailor, “But I would like to find out.”
With that, he took the sheep girl’s hand, and they jumped out of the abandoned stall. They landed softly on the fresh earth.
“How do we suppose we do that?” asked the sheep girl.
“I don’t know yet,” answered the sailor “but what I do know is that we don’t have much time. So move along now.”
“How do you know that?”
“I don’t know.”
And they walked off, leaving the circus grounds.
The moon shone high overhead, lighting the two dolls’ way as they ventured through the field.
“Where exactly do you think we should go?” asked the sheep girl.
“I think we’ll know it when we see it,” explained the sailor, cutting through the tall grass.
The sheep girl, knowing no better, simply followed.
They crossed the field and came upon a gloomy forest. Eerie sounds can be heard from deep within it.
The sheep girl shuddered in fear.
“I’m scared.”
The sailor, though new to this world, was brave. He held the sheep girl’s hand and smiled.
“Come. I’ll make sure nothing happens to us both.”
The sheep girl felt a light sensation in her chest. She smiled back and followed the sailor as they walked.
Very little moonlight passed through the dense canopy of the forest, but that didn’t stop the brave sailor. He traversed the ups and downs of the forest, guiding the sheep girl as he did.
They moved on, and on, and on, until finally, the two dolls got out of the forest.
They were above a hill. Below them, distant, was a light.
“There!” exclaimed the sailor, “We have to go there.”
No sooner did he utter his words when suddenly, thunder crackled and lightning flashed. It began to rain.
“Eeek!” shouted the sheep girl, her dress getting wet from the raindrops.
The sailor, being instinctive, grabbed the sheep girl’s hand and ran.
They ran downhill, the rain coming down hard. The sailor can no longer see where he was going, but he was determined to get them both to the light.
The sheep girl, being too frail, tripped over a small stone and fell.
“Help me!” she cried, her foot stuck in the mud.
The sailor didn’t give it a second thought. He went back and pulled the sheep girl out of the mud.
“My leg’s broken.” Said the sheep girl weakly, showing her mangled foot.
The sailor examined it. Seeing that it was no use forcing her to walk, he thought of the only alternative.
“I will carry you.”
Without hesitation, he carried the sheep girl on his back and started walking through the storm. He knew that at this rate, he wouldn’t make it in time to reach the light.
But he also knew that he had to try.
The sailor, with the sheep girl on his back, pressed on through the darkness. Finally, his little body couldn’t take it anymore, and one of his legs broke as well.
The sheep girl, seeing her friend fall, dragged him into cover, protecting him from the rain.
When they were finally at rest, the sailor spoke sadly.
“We won’t make it.”
The sheep girl, seeing the sadness in her friend’s face, knew she could do nothing.
She simply took the resting sailor’s hand and smiled.
“It doesn’t matter.”
The sailor felt a strange lightness in his chest, and smiled back. In the end, it no longer matters to him either.

Little Susie rushed out of the backyard, squinting as the hot sun shone brightly through their garden.
She walked the short path to the playground, like she always does, and eyed her favorite swing.
But, unlike before, a surprise was waiting for her underneath the seat.
Two dolls, a sailor and a sheep girl, were sitting side by side on the ground. Susie noticed that, though wet and lifeless, they both have the prettiest smiles etched on their faces.
Susie, excited with her find, took both dolls into her arms and ran home, hoping her mom could fix them for her.
